Sulfur hexafluoride...if you try to say it 10 times fast it will tie your tongue in knots. It’s the most famous of all the F-gases, and for any pop culture fans it’s similar to being the most famous murder victim in any of the Friday the 13th movies.

All joking aside, this seemingly unknown gas, is one of the worst gases in the world, and one on which rely very much.

Where Will HVAC/R Be in 2030?

This week in Dallas, a group of industry leaders assembled to meet and review the past year, to plan for the future and to reacquaint each other with projects, perspective, concerns and opportunities. The Food Marketing Institute is a group of grocery leaders that run the food retail companies all across the US. The Energy and Store Development Conference, known commonly as E+Sd, brings together engineers, facilities and design members of this community. The group of people in this show are responsible for the designs, safety, conditions and quality for every grocer in the US. It’s also important that grocers large and small attend, yet the entire show can be held in one hotel – simply amazing.

Grocery & Supermarket companies are at the heart of most communities. They have an enormous footprint in our neighborhoods, and one of the largest impacts on our economy and environment. Trakref®️ attends because in that one hotel, every year when they get together to talk, they strategize about how to best handle the emerging and challenging set of HVAC/R Regulations that impact every aspect of energy, food quality, storage and safety. It’s the only focused approach. No other group devotes this much attention to the topic, and we are right at the center of issue to share, learn and help guide the discussion about the best path to compliance.

EPA Settlement: The Gray Areas of Compliance

Most activity in the news lately about state and federal legislation fighting climate change through refrigeration management has focused heavily on refrigerant phase-outs and carbon credits. So it caught our attention this week when the US entered into a settlement with Southeastern Grocers Inc., alleging they had violated the Clean Air Act by failing to promptly repair refrigerant leaks, and to keep adequate service records about their refrigeration equipment maintenance and compliance records.

We strongly agree that addressing leaks and keeping solid records are critical not only to maintaining compliance, but to reducing the release of greenhouse gasses, and protecting your  company’s bottom line. The trouble is, the EPA’s settlement requirements are filled with gray areas that make adhering to them complicated.

CARB is Collecting Feedback

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) is working on creating new requirements intended to help the state achieve the emissions reduction goals of SB1383. They are specifically aimed at reducing high global warming potential (GWP) HFCs in stationary refrigeration and air conditioning equipment. Last week they invited stakeholders from the HVAC/R industry, including equipment manufacturers and retailers, to a presentation and open discussion of these proposed measures. The goal of the meeting was to get feedback from the people who would be directly affected by these measures to get their input on how to make them feasible.

Stationary refrigeration equipment includes refrigerators, freezers, and other contained systems that use refrigerant to cool items stored inside the system. Stationary AC chillers use the refrigeration process to cool buildings or rooms.
